Toronto, Ontario is the largest city in Canada, with over two and a half million residents, that sits on the northern shoreline of Lake Ontario. Over 25% of Canada's population lives within two hours of Toronto, making it one of the most contemporary and cosmopolitan destinations in North America. The town of York, the predecessor to the city, was founded in 1793, making it one of the oldest major cities in Canada. It took the name of Toronto (based on a Native Canadian name for the area) in 1834. Since 1867, it has served as the capital of the province of Ontario.
With such a large and diverse population, it should come as no surprise that there are a ton of things to do when visiting the city. The performing arts are a major part of the city's growing cultural scene, with two city symphony orchestras and over four dozen dance and ballet troupes. The Toronto Centre for the Arts, the Princess of Wales Theatre, the Royal Alexandra Theatre, and the Hummingbird Centre are only four of the venues in the city dedicated to the arts. There are also a number of museums in Toronto, from a museum dedicated to shoes (the Bata Shoe Museum) to large museums dedicated to world history and culture (the Royal Ontario Museum).
Toronto residents know how to throw a party, and there are hundreds of annual events throughout the year. Canadian Music Week, for example, is a celebration of the nation's appreciation for music, both from Canadians and from artists born outside the country. It is held for four days every March. The month of April sees two film festivals come to town: Hot Docs, a festival focused on documentaries and other narrative films, and the Sprockets Toronto International Film Festival for Children, which focuses on films for young viewers.
Sports fans will find plenty of options in Toronto to feed their appetite. Many professional sports teams call Toronto home, including Major League Baseball's Toronto Blue Jays, the Canadian Football League's Toronto Argonauts, and the National Hockey League's Toronto Maple Leafs. The Raptors play NBA basketball in Toronto, and Major League Soccer and Major League Lacrosse also field teams in the city. In addition to Canadian football, American football makes its way across the border occasionally, as the Buffalo Bills play one game a year in Toronto, and the city plays host to an intercollegiate NCAA game as well.
No matter what your passion is, Toronto has something available to offer you. With its large population, friendly people, and diverse cultural backgrounds, the city serves as the backdrop to a memorable time for you and your family.
